Mayor of Winchester's Charities 2013-14

Cllr Ernest JeffsCllr Ernie Jeffs was appointed as the new Mayor of Winchester at a Mayor Making Ceremony at Winchester Guildhall on Wednesday 15th May 2013 - his wife, Barbara will serve as the Mayoress.

Cllr Jeffs and his wife officially took over the role from Cllr Frank Pearson and his wife Anne, to become the 814th Mayor of Winchester; the second oldest Mayoralty in England.

After leaving full-time education I joined the Post Office Research station at Dollis Hill NW London. These were my formative years in employment and the Post Office sponsored me in further education to enable me to obtain a degree in electronic and radio engineering.

I left the Post Office to seek opportunities in private industry and joined a company engaged in defence development, in particular systems for the Royal Navy. There were a few company changes during my career which involved me in project management and account management. In the final years my work demanded that I consult and negotiate with senior members of the Ministry of Defence up to Secretary of State level. I consider I’ve had a very interesting and fulfilling career.

I was elected ward councillor for The Alresfords in 2000. I have served on several WCC committees but my main preoccupation has been on planning, spending seven years as chairman of the Planning Development Control Committee. Locally, I’ve participated in the writing the Alresford Design Statement and lately in the early stages of developing the Local Plan.

My first early charity venture was supplying ‘speaking books’ to blind people for the RNIB whilst living in the Camberley area. On moving to Alresford in 1986 I have been associated with the following charitable organisations:-

  • Friends of the Samaritans as Chairman
  • Assisting my wife with her charity, Arthritis and Rheumatism Council
  • Chairman of the Alresford PROBUS Club
  • Member of the Alresford Community Centre fund raising team
  • Member of the Alresford Society
  • Branch Chairman of a local political association.

My main interests are listening to classical music, tending to an extensive garden, travelling when my wife and I have the time.

During my younger years I participated two sports which have recently enjoyed a spectacular revival, skating and competitive cycling.
